Dr Leigh Gordon is an accredited SASMA Sports Physician. She did her undergraduate training at UCT, then completed Family Medicine training in Cambridge (UK) where she worked as a family physician with interest in Sports Medicine for 10 years. She returned to Cape Town to complete her post-graduate studies in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
She has been the Team doctor for the Springbok Sevens Senior Men, Academy and Women’s teams for the last 3 years. She is a volunteer Medical Officer for the International Field Hockey Federation (FIH), most recently appointed as CMO for World Series men’s and women’s events in 2017. Her private practice is situated within the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Cape Town.
She is a World Rugby Senior Medical trainer, training doctors and physiotherapists in the “Immediate Care in Rugby” pitch-side acute medical care course. She has been an invited speaker at several national conferences (incl. SASMA and SASHA) on cardiac screening, acute illness before endurance events and return-to-play protocols, as well as Comrades Marathon Seminar for Women. Her special interests include concussion management (especially in young athletes), cardiac screening and RTP after acute illness.
